God's Mandate From The Beginning: Living FM-GEG

Anyone who's sent a lot of time reading the Bible can recognize two monumental pillars of truth standing at the beginning and the end of our understanding of God's will for us. The first is the Creation Mandate given to Adam reaffirmed to Noah, Abraham, and Jacob, and found throughout scripture: "Be fruitful and multiply." The second is the "Chief End of Man," most famously captured in the Westminster Confession: "To glorify God and enjoy Him forever."

At The Better Ministry, we recognize that these are not two separate instructions. They are a single, rhythmic pulse of life—a unified "heartbeat" and its resulting "effect." We call this mnemonic FM-GEG: to be Fruitful and Multiply for the Glory and Enjoyment of God.

This isn't just a religious slogan; it is the universal will of God for mankind, expressed from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22. It is the core programming of what it means to be made in the image of God.

The Two Pillars of FM-GEG

1. The Pillar of Action: Fruitful and Multiply (FM) To be Fruitful is to be talent-yielding. It is the objective act of taking the raw materials of life God has made possible—your skills, your time, your resources—and yielding the most value possible. To Multiply is to increase that value, scaling it through relationships so that it reaches far beyond yourself. This is the "Effect" of God's rule through you. It is the "On Earth" work that reflects the essence of Heaven.

2. The Pillar of Purpose: Glory and Enjoyment (GEG) Action without purpose is a robotic chore. To Glorify God is to give Him all the credit, recognizing that He is the Source of the ability and the structure. To Enjoy Him is the subjective "Affect"—the visceral realization of joy in the process. Without enjoyment, the human spirit eventually fragments; with it, we find the sustainability to keep going. This is the "heartbeat" that keeps the action alive.

The Evidence of Truth and Wisdom

If these were just high-minded ideals, they would be difficult to sustain. But God has provided two great tracks of evidence to confirm that FM-GEG is the only path to what is truly Better.

  • The Track of Prophecy (Confidence): Scripture makes bold claims about history before it happens. From the rise of kingdoms to the arrival of the Messiah, the historical fulfillment of prophecy provides the objective evidence that the Source of this mandate is reliable. We can have confidence in the "Instruction Manual" because the "Author" has proven He sees the end from the beginning.

  • The Track of Wisdom (LPE): Beyond the written word, God has "baked" His logic into the very geometry of existence. This is the secularly observable reality of Logos (Structure), Pathos (Reward), and Ethos (Sanity).

    • Logos: The universe has a non-contradictory structure.

    • Pathos: There is a smoother, intended reward for following that structure.

    • Ethos: It is simply "sane" to align our will with the way things were built.

The Heartbeat of Love

The common thread that unites these pillars is Love. In the world, everything seems to divide—chaos, conflict, and competition tear at the fabric of our relationships. But in God’s rule, Love is the fuel that complements and unites.

Everything God does is united in Love. When we choose a path other than FM-GEG, we suffer—not because God is hovering over us with a mallet, but because we are fighting the very essence of reality. To live outside of FM-GEG is to attempt to breathe underwater; it is a structural impossibility that leads to exhaustion and failure.

Relatable Examples

For Adam and Eve, FM-GEG was as tangible as tending and keeping the Garden. God gave them the required talents and the opportunity to provide for all their needs. After the Fall, the curse did not just remove them from the Garden; it added friction to the geometry. It required more work for the same yield. As their family grew, the work was distributed—but we also see the first breakdown of the "Us" when a life was needlessly taken. Here, FM-GEG is revealed as the talent-enabled fruiting that either multiplies for the glory of God or withers when a life is needlessly taken.

We see this in every endeavor today:

  • Talent and Fruit: Trying to produce in an area where you are not talented rarely yields the same fruit as working within your God-given design.

  • Fruiting and Multiplying: Attempting to multiply a process that isn't already fruiting is an exercise in futility. True multiplication follows healthy production.

  • Glory and Enjoyment of God: Ignoring that God makes your work possible is not only non-appreciative, it's like claiming you created water every time you take a drink! And if the earthly consequences are not obvious enough, the eternal ones certainly are—just ask Satan.

Whether raising a family, leading a team, or pursuing a career, the principle remains: when we operate within the creative will of God, we are functionally more likely to be fruitful and multiply for His glory and our enjoyment. Without the Holy Spirit, it is tempting to claim the glory for ourselves. But with a saving faith in Jesus Christ, the gifting of the Holy Spirit makes it clear that nothing good is possible without the sovereignty of God.

Everything God creates is potentially fruitful and multiplying, but it only reaches its peak potential when it aligns with His creative will—the way He programmed it to be sustained. This applies to raising a family as much as it does to performing a job, building a community, or pursuing any life objective.

Every time we operate within the will of God, it is more likely to be fruitful and multiply for His glory and our enjoyment. Without the Holy Spirit, it is tempting to claim the glory for ourselves, leading to a "Value conflict." But with a saving faith in Jesus Christ, the gift of the Holy Spirit makes it clear that nothing truly "Better" is possible without the sovereignty of God.

Living it Today

We can wait and see what happens once we're dead, or we can choose to be FM-GEG each and every day we are still breathing. From the Garden of Eden to the New Heavens and Earth, this has always been God's will—the very reason Jesus Christ died, so that we could unite in His glory forever.

At The Better Ministry, we are devoted to this FM-GEG calling as directed by the Holy Spirit. And we look forward to enjoying everything God has planned with every soul who's doing the same. When we align our heartbeat with His will, His love and our actions fuel His creation (LPE). The result is an undeniable ripple of what is truly Better for every life that is tuned into it—including your family and community—on earth as it is in heaven.

Fruitful and Multiplying

As you look at the image atop this article, you can’t help but to focus on the seemingly delicious red apple in the center.  But if you look beyond it, you see an orchard full of apples, each tree brimming with fruit.  That is a glimmer of what is meant in Scripture when it comes to the words fruitful and multiply, from being trees planted in the word of God and nourished by the Holy Spirit, to sharing all we’ve been blessed with for the glory and enjoyment of God. Derivations of the word fruitful are found over 200 times in Scripture, and the word multiply is used in nearly 100 passages. When you think of the fruit of the Spirit, bearing fruit in the vine of Christ, and spreading the gospel to the whole world, you are just beginning to recognize the full extent of fruitful and multiply in Scripture. But only a small number of those instances refer to procreation, and even then, it required more than reproduction to support families, communities and nations. This short article...
